Thornton Wilder and Ken Ludwig’s adaptation of George Farquhar classic 18th century farce, The Beaux’ Stratagem, tells the tale of Aimwell and Archer, two charming, dissolute young men who have spent their fortunes carousing in London. Now shamed and debt-ridden, they flee to provincial Lichfield. They decide the only way to recover their wealth is to marry for money. They take rooms at the local inn posing as master and servant. While in town they encounter the young, beautiful, wealthy, and perceptive Dorinda and Mrs. Sullen. Will the Beaux, Aimwell and Archer, succeed in their stratagem? That remains to be seen because here in this seemly gentle countryside they encounter a teeming variety of human obstacles to their marriage plans: a crooked landlord, a fearsome highwayman, a fervent French Count, a maid on the make, a drunken husband, a furious butler, a natural healer of dubious abilities, and a strange, turbulent priest. Maybe, if they can survive the misunderstandings, mistaken identities, and masterly sword play they may attain both wealth and love.
