Robert Mattson and Marjorie Nilssen are from New London, Minnesota, and are sharing their work in acrylic and wax for this exhibit. Robert Mattson earned an MA in Art from St. Cloud State University in St. Cloud, MN. He was an Art Professor at Ridgewater College in Willmar, Minnesota from 1967-2001. Mattson’s paintings are expressions of formal oneness created through a process of give and take. They are spontaneous and intuitive and are the culmination of 65 years of being a painter.
Marjorie Nilssen earned an MA in Art from St. Cloud State University in St. Cloud, MN. She was an Art Professor at Ridgewater College in Willmar, Minnesota from 1988-2021. For the past 10 years she has been fascinated with the encaustic process because of its sensual and forgiving qualities. Most of the works in the exhibit were created by melting wax, burning paper and adding color to create unique forms. Sometimes, melted wax and oil paint is mixed and carefully applied to wood panels. Marjorie works intuitively and spontaneously to discover the most unique one-of-a kind pieces which are purely aesthetic and are not connected with any specific meanings or symbols.
