Assistant Professor of Special Education, Visiting

The Education Department at Rockford University is seeking a dedicated and dynamic individual for a full-time, Visiting Assistant Professor of Special Education position. This individual will be expected to contribute to the academic mission at liberal arts institution through teaching, research, and service within the department and university community. The position is to begin August 2025. Nighttime, in-person, and online teaching will be required.  A rich benefits package is available, upon hire, including medical, dental, vision, retirement plan with match and tuition remission for employee, spouse/partner and dependents.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in Education and related areas such as social emotional development, teaching methods, communication, and assistive technology, with a 4/4 teaching load.
  • Mentor and support undergraduate and graduate students, fostering their academic and professional growth.
  • Participate in curriculum development and program assessment to ensure academic excellence.
  • Engage in university service, including departmental meetings.
  • Engage with community outreach and interdisciplinary initiatives within the university.
  • Stay current with developments in the field and integrate new knowledge into teaching and research.
  • Provide students access to one-on-one interaction through set office hours.

Qualifications:

  • Education:
    • Master’s Degree in the appropriate field (preference will be given to those with the appropriate terminal degree (Ph.D. or Ed.D).
  • Experience:
    • At least four years K-12 teaching experience
    • Demonstrated expertise in successful higher education teaching, particularly in Education.
    • Experience mentoring students at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels.
  • Knowledge & Skills:
    • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
    • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative academic environment.
    • Proficiency in integrating technology and modern methodologies into classroom teaching.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in curriculum development and program assessment
  • Involvement in professional organizations related to Special Education
